Remco Evenepoel won a fourth straight world time trial title, and Marlen Reusser won hers on her birthday

The Road World Championships, cycling's annual world title event, opened in Montreal, Canada on Sunday with the time trials, in which riders race the clock one at a time. Remco Evenepoel of Belgium won the men's event by 57 seconds, the first man to win it four years running. Marlen Reusser of Switzerland kept the women's title by 40 seconds, on her 35th birthday.

The sport spent a full afternoon and a very expensive stopwatch confirming a result Belgium has been announcing since 2023.

The Red Sox lost, then made the playoffs an hour later

The Boston Red Sox lost 5-1 in Tampa, Florida on Sunday and then qualified for the playoffs, baseball's postseason tournament, about an hour afterward, when the Houston Astros lost in Atlanta. Boston was 32-46 in late June and has gone 52-25 since. The home run that beat Houston was hit by Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of a Boston legend, who plays for Atlanta.

Boston qualified for the playoffs by losing and then waiting an hour, a method the department has been trying for years without result.

Manchester City beat Sunderland 5-3, and Erling Haaland has now scored against every team he has faced

Manchester City beat Sunderland 5-3 in Manchester, England on Sunday, a fifth win in five games under new manager Enzo Maresca, and lead the league by three points. Sunderland's Brian Brobbey scored three goals and lost. Erling Haaland's late goal, first ruled out and then allowed on video review, means he has scored against all 25 English top-division clubs he has played.

Manchester City conceded three goals to a team that was in the second division two seasons ago and still won by two, which says less about their defending than about what they spend on the other end.

The Eagles won with nine seconds left, and Ole Miss beat the coach who built its team

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Tennessee Titans 24-20 in Nashville, Tennessee on Sunday with a touchdown pass thrown with nine seconds left. Green Bay beat the New York Jets 20-17 in overtime, and Minnesota beat Chicago 9-3; Chicago's quarterback Caleb Williams left with a hamstring injury. On Saturday Ole Miss beat LSU 32-24 behind quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, whom LSU's new coach Lane Kiffin recruited to Ole Miss last year. Sunday's late games ended after this was filed.

The Eagles needed all but nine seconds of the allotted time, which is how most of us submit things too.

The United States lost to Czechia in the Davis Cup for a second straight year

The Davis Cup is the team world championship of men's tennis, played country against country. In Prague on Saturday the United States led Czechia 2-1 and lost 3-2: Jakub Mensik, 21, beat Ben Shelton, the world number four, and Jiri Lehecka beat Learner Tien. It is the second year running the Americans have gone out at this stage; Czechia advances to the final eight.

The United States has now been eliminated two years running by the same country of eleven million people, from a competition named after an American.

Jacob Bridgeman shot 61 from five behind to win the first tour event in Asheville since 1942

The Biltmore Championship in Asheville, North Carolina was the first professional tour golf tournament held in the city since 1942. Jacob Bridgeman, 26, started Sunday five shots behind, shot a 61, ten under par and the best round of his career, and won by two. Runner-up Ben James also shot 61. Bridgeman grew up about an hour away in South Carolina.

The tour had not visited Asheville since 1942, and on its return two players shot 61, so the city has been moved to a shorter waiting list.

Angel Reese became the first player with 500 rebounds in a season, and Kelsey Mitchell set the scoring record

In the WNBA, the American women's professional basketball league, two single-season records fell this week. Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream became the first player to collect 500 rebounds, the loose balls gathered after missed shots, in one season. On Friday Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever passed the scoring record and finished the season with 1,034 points. The playoffs begin later this week.

A rebound is what you get when someone else misses, and Reese has collected five hundred of them, which makes her the league's most reliable cleanup.
