Demi Vollering won the women's Tour de France, her second

The Tour de France Femmes ended Sunday in Nice, and Demi Vollering of the Netherlands won it for the second time, the first woman to do so. She took the race lead from Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma on Saturday, then won the final stage alone by more than a minute, finishing 1 minute 18 seconds ahead overall. Lorena Wiebes, who led the opening days, won the sprinters' competition.

She arrived in Nice wearing the leader's yellow jersey and then rode away from everyone anyway, which is the athletic equivalent of showing your work.

The rained-out Washington finals finished on Monday, and made history

The DC Open finals, suspended by storms in our last issue, were completed Monday. Alexandra Eala, 21, came from behind to beat world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 and become the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles title. Taylor Fritz beat 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar for the men's title. The tour has since moved to Canada, where the National Bank Open finals are Thursday.

The final took three days, two rain delays and one overnight hold, and the trailing player still won going away, so the weather may deserve an assist.

Baseball's big trade went through, and then the new guy lost

The aftermath of a record trade deadline week, in which roughly 160 players changed teams, settled in this week. Tarik Skubal, the best pitcher in baseball, made his first start for the Los Angeles Dodgers and lost 5-1 to the Chicago Cubs. The Milwaukee Brewers, who made no such blockbuster, became the first team to reach 70 wins.

The team that bought the best pitcher in baseball promptly lost his first game, which the rest of the league has filed under encouraging.

Michael Brennan won the Wyndham Championship, and the golf playoffs are set

Michael Brennan won the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina on Sunday, the final event of golf's regular season, holding a four-shot cushion down the stretch for his second PGA Tour title. The result locks in the field for the FedEx Cup playoffs, golf's postseason, which begins next week.

Golf has playoffs now, and the last man in got there by the sensible method of winning the last tournament.

Football returned with an exhibition game, decided at the last second anyway

The NFL preseason opened Thursday with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, where the Carolina Panthers beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-30 on a last-second drive led by rookie quarterback Haynes King. The full preseason schedule begins this Thursday; games that count start in September.

An exhibition game with nothing at stake came down to the final play, because football players have not yet been told about stakes.

The Guimarães transfer went through, and the shopping continues

Bruno Guimarães' move from Newcastle to Arsenal, agreed the week Newcastle also lost their manager, is now complete. Tottenham are closing on Manchester City's Savinho for about 60 million pounds, and the transfer window stays open until September 1. Next Sunday Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser, in Cardiff.

Arsenal's new midfielder will debut against the club trying to sell Arsenal's rivals a winger, which is August paperwork at its finest.
